Tennessee offers several health coverage programs. Here is a quick overview.
TennCare Medicaid
Full Medicaid coverage for eligible low-income Tennesseans, including children, pregnant women, seniors, and people with disabilities.
Who qualifies: Children, pregnant women (up to 195% FPL), parents/caretakers with very low income, SSI recipients, seniors, and people with disabilities.
CoverKids (CHIP)
Health coverage for uninsured children under 19 whose family income is too high for TennCare but at or below 250% FPL.
Who qualifies: Uninsured children under 19 in families with income between TennCare limits and 250% FPL.
TennCare Nursing Home Medicaid
Covers nursing home care for eligible individuals. Income limit is 300% of SSI ($2,829/month). Asset limits apply.
Who qualifies: Individuals who need nursing home level of care, meet income and asset limits, and are Tennessee residents.
CHOICES (Long-Term Care)
TennCare's managed long-term services and supports program, offering both nursing home care and home/community-based alternatives.
Who qualifies: Seniors and adults with physical disabilities who need long-term care services.
Employment and Community First CHOICES (ECF)
Supports for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities to live and work in their communities.
Who qualifies: People with intellectual or developmental disabilities.
Medicare Savings Programs
Help low-income Medicare beneficiaries pay Medicare premiums, deductibles, and copays. Includes QMB, SLMB, and QI programs.
Who qualifies: Medicare beneficiaries with income up to 135% FPL (varies by specific program).
Katie Beckett / Medicaid Diversion
Provides a pathway to TennCare for children with significant medical needs, regardless of parent income.
Who qualifies: Children under 18 with serious medical conditions who would otherwise need institutional care.
